Asbestos is a collection of fibrous minerals that were frequently utilized in construction materials before 1990 due to their robustness, longevity, and fire-resistant characteristics. Nevertheless, the use of asbestos is now banned in Canada due to its detrimental effects on human health. However, asbestos may still be present in older building materials, such as:

  • house siding

  • cement and plaster

  • floor and ceiling tiles

  • roofing products, such as:

    • tar paper

    • shingles and felt

  • surface treatments, such as:

    • paint

    • putty

    • drywall

    • caulking

    • sealants

    • spackling

  • industrial furnaces and heating systems

  • insulation, including around hot water pipes and tanks

It is crucial to take precautions when handling or renovating buildings that may contain asbestos.
